What this worksheet covers

This is a 20-problem drill for grade 7 decimals, printed in black and white with the key on page two. What makes this set particular: eighteen of the twenty problems involve a negative quantity and several problems use mixed numbers, which have to be handled without dropping the whole-number part. Problems 7 and 14, for instance, are "0.6 × 6.9" and "-1/12 × (-2 1/3)". Common Core 7.NS.2 is the slot this page fills.

Skills practised

Grade 7 decimals means adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing signed decimals, and repeating decimals. What a student is asked to do here is grade 7 Multiplying Rational Numbers. To finish it, a student has to work in fractional units and give the answer in lowest terms, keep the decimal points aligned, and track direction as well as magnitude.

About the drill format

A drill is straight practice: 20 problems of the same kind, laid out across the page with working space under each — problem 7, "0.6 × 6.9" is typical of the whole page. A run of one decimal operation is where point alignment stops being a decision and becomes a habit.

Set A, Set B and Set C

Set A is the sheet as it was first published on MathSheetLab, and Sets B and C were derived from it problem by problem: each number became a slot redrawn with the same shape, and every answer was recomputed exactly. Where Set A's problem 11 is "-1 3/5 × (-2/3)", Set B's is "-9 3/5 × (-2/3)".

How to use this worksheet

Expect twenty minutes or so of real attention for twenty problems. At grade 7, decimals rewards care over speed — a rushed drill gets the arithmetic right and the signs or units wrong. Use the key as a check, not as a grade; none of the twenty problems needs a score attached to be useful.

One mistake to watch for

Decimals are aligned to the right: 3.5 + 0.42 = 3.92. On this grade 7 drill, problem 14 ("-1/12 × (-2 1/3)") is the kind of item where it shows.

The right-alignment habit from whole numbers is being applied to a notation where the point, not the right edge, fixes the value.

Write in the placeholder zero (3.50) before adding; aligning the points then aligns everything else.
