What this worksheet covers

This is a 30-problem mixed review for grade 4 decimals, printed in black and white with the key on page two. Some values are written as fractions rather than whole numbers and operands run to two decimal places, so the decimal points have to be lined up rather than the right-hand digits. Problems 11 and 21, for instance, are "5.2 + 5.4" and "7.3 + 4.2". The sheet sits inside Common Core 4.NF.6, in the grade 4 Number & Operations—Fractions strand.

Skills practised

At grade 4, decimals is about tenths and hundredths as fractions and decimals, comparing decimals, and adding tenths, and this sheet takes one slice of that. The skills on the page: tenths and hundredths as fractions and decimals, comparing decimals to hundredths, and adding tenths. Working the page asks a student to work in fractional units and give the answer in lowest terms, keep the decimal points aligned, and carry money notation through to the answer. 26 different answers appear across the 30 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.

About the mixed review format

Mixed review changes the problem shape as the page goes on, so the 30 problems here cover five different skills rather than one procedure repeated; problem 11, "5.2 + 5.4" sits next to problems of a different kind. Adding, comparing and multiplying on the same page keeps the student choosing where the point goes rather than assuming.

Set A, Set B and Set C

All three sets are produced by the site's deterministic generator from a fixed seed, so they are the same every time the site is built and the answer keys are exact. Where Set A's problem 16 is "6.7 + 5.1", Set B's is "$8.73 + $16.98".

How to use this worksheet

By grade 4 a student should take all 30 decimals problems in one sitting. If the page takes more than about fifteen minutes, the underlying facts are probably not automatic yet, and that is worth fixing before more decimals practice piles on. If more than a third of the 30 problems come back wrong, stop and step back a grade in decimals rather than assigning Set B.

One mistake to watch for

More digits means bigger: 0.125 is judged larger than 0.3. On this grade 4 mixed review, problem 21 ("7.3 + 4.2") is the kind of item where it shows.

Whole-number length comparison is being applied after the point.

Pad both numbers to the same number of places before comparing.
