What this worksheet covers
Set A of this grade 4 word problems sheet holds ten story problems on one printable page, with the answer key on the page behind it. What makes this set particular: each problem arrives as a few sentences of context rather than a bare expression and operands run to two decimal places, so the decimal points have to be lined up rather than the right-hand digits. Two problems from the middle of the page — "A store sold 5 scarves for $31.45 total. Each scarf costs…" and "Sam ran 2.2 km on Saturday and 1.2 km on Sunday. Which day…" — show the range.
Skills practised
At grade 4, decimals is about tenths and hundredths as fractions and decimals, comparing decimals, and adding tenths, and this sheet takes one slice of that. Working the page asks a student to read a situation and choose an operation before computing, keep the decimal points aligned, and carry money notation through to the answer. Nine different answers appear across the ten problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.
About the word problems format
Story problems are set one to a line with room to work underneath, problem 4, "A store sold 5 scarves for $31.45 total. Each scarf costs…" among them, and the key gives each of the 10 answers with its unit. Money and measurement are where decimals live outside the classroom, and where a misplaced point is obviously wrong.
Set A, Set B and Set C
The three sets come from the same generator with three different seeds: same skill, same layout, fresh numbers, and an answer key computed with the problems. Where Set A's problem 6 is "A librarian has 40 books to place equally on 4 shelves. How…", Set B's is "A recipe needs 0.5 cups of sugar. Willa wants to make 5…".
How to use this worksheet
Work the ten problems straight through, then check against the key together rather than handing it back marked; asking a grade 4 student to find their own decimals error teaches more than seeing it circled. If more than a third of the ten problems come back wrong, stop and step back a grade in decimals rather than assigning Set B.
One mistake to watch for
More digits means bigger: 0.125 is judged larger than 0.3. On this grade 4 word problems, problem 7 ("Sam ran 2.2 km on Saturday and 1.2 km on Sunday. Which day…") is the kind of item where it shows.
Whole-number length comparison is being applied after the point.
Pad both numbers to the same number of places before comparing.
