What this worksheet covers

Set A of this grade 3 word problems sheet holds ten story problems on one printable page, with the answer key on the page behind it. Every problem is set in a short situation, so the first decision is which operation it calls for and several problems use mixed numbers, which have to be handled without dropping the whole-number part. Two problems from the middle of the page — "A library had 47 books on a cart and shelved 41 of them.…" and "Leo shares a pizza cut into 4 equal pieces and eats 2. What…" — show the range.

Skills practised

At grade 3, fractions is about naming fractions of a whole, equivalent fractions, and comparing like denominators, and this sheet takes one slice of that. Working the page asks a student to read a situation and choose an operation before computing. Eight different answers appear across the ten problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.

About the word problems format

Story problems are set one to a line with room to work underneath, problem 4, "A library had 47 books on a cart and shelved 41 of them.…" among them, and the key gives each of the 10 answers with its unit. Fractions of recipes, distances and shares are where the abstract unit becomes a real quantity.

Set A, Set B and Set C

The three sets come from the same generator with three different seeds: same skill, same layout, fresh numbers, and an answer key computed with the problems. Where Set A's problem 6 is "There are 54 seeds in one carton and 52 seeds in another…", Set B's is "A bus starts with 132 riders and picks up 104 more at the…".

How to use this worksheet

Work the ten problems straight through, then check against the key together rather than handing it back marked; asking a grade 3 student to find their own fractions error teaches more than seeing it circled. Use the key as a check, not as a grade; none of the ten problems needs a score attached to be useful.

One mistake to watch for

Equivalent fractions are made by adding the same number to top and bottom: 2/3 becomes 3/4. Watch problem 7 of this word problems — "Leo shares a pizza cut into 4 equal pieces and eats 2. What…" — for this one.

Multiplying and adding are being confused in the renaming step.

Draw the fraction, cut every piece in half, and count; the pieces double, they do not gain one.
