Break each total into equal groups. Write how many are in one group.
- 1.12 is an even number. Split it into 2 equal groups. How many are in each group?
- 2.14 is an even number. Split it into 2 equal groups. How many are in each group?
- 3.16 is an even number. Split it into 2 equal groups. How many are in each group?
- 4.18 is an even number. Split it into 2 equal groups. How many are in each group?
- 5.20 is an even number. Split it into 2 equal groups. How many are in each group?
- 6.10 is an even number. Split it into 2 equal groups. How many are in each group?
- 7.8 is an even number. Split it into 2 equal groups. How many are in each group?
- 8.6 is an even number. Split it into 2 equal groups. How many are in each group?
- 9.Put 12 counters into 3 equal groups. How many are in each group?
- 10.Put 15 counters into 3 equal groups. How many are in each group?
- 11.Put 18 counters into 3 equal groups. How many are in each group?
- 12.Put 12 counters into 4 equal groups. How many are in each group?

What this worksheet covers
Sixteen story problems fill this word problems page; problem 6 asks "10 is an even number. Split it into 2 equal groups. How…", and the sheet stays at that level throughout. Every problem is set in a short situation, so the first decision is which operation it calls for and the numbers run as high as 20. Further down, problem 11 asks "Put 18 counters into 3 equal groups. How many are in each…". The sheet sits inside Common Core 2.OA.3, in the grade 2 Operations & Algebraic Thinking strand.
Skills practised
The grade 2 mixed operations sequence covers addition and subtraction within 100 and 1,000, and three-term problems; this page sits inside it. Specifically, the problems practise grade 2 Equal Groups and Halving. Working the page asks a student to read a situation and choose an operation before computing. Eight different answers appear across the sixteen problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.
About the word problems format
Story problems are set one to a line with room to work underneath, problem 6, "10 is an even number. Split it into 2 equal groups. How…" among them, and the key gives each of the 16 answers with its unit. The whole job in a mixed word problem is choosing the operation, which is exactly what a one-operation page never asks.
Set A, Set B and Set C
Set A is the original MathSheetLab worksheet; Sets B and C keep its structure and redraw the numbers, with each answer recomputed rather than copied. Where Set A's problem 9 is "Put 12 counters into 3 equal groups. How many are in each…", Set B's is "Put 20 counters into 5 equal groups. How many are in each…".
How to use this worksheet
Grade 2 attention runs short, so split these sixteen mixed operations problems over two or three sittings rather than pushing through in one; a number line or counters within reach is a strategy, not a failure. Use the key as a check, not as a grade; none of the sixteen problems needs a score attached to be useful.
One mistake to watch for
The operation sign is ignored: every problem on a mixed page is added. Problem 11 on this grade 2 word problems page, "Put 18 counters into 3 equal groups. How many are in each…", is where to look for it.
Sign reading is not yet part of the routine because most practice pages only carry one operation.
Have the student circle or trace every operation sign before solving anything on the page.
