What this worksheet covers

There are ten story problems here — one page to work, one page of answers to check against — and Sets B and C repeat the layout with different numbers. What makes this set particular: seven of the ten problems involve a negative quantity and each problem arrives as a few sentences of context rather than a bare expression. Problems 4 and 7, for instance, are "Willa had $47.00 in an account, then made 2 equal…" and "The temperature was -15.3°C at dawn and rose by 11.9°C by…".

Skills practised

Grade 7 decimals means adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing signed decimals, and repeating decimals. To finish it, a student has to read a situation and choose an operation before computing, work in fractional units and give the answer in lowest terms, and keep the decimal points aligned.

About the word problems format

The 10 story problems each get a full line and an answer rule; problem 4, "Willa had $47.00 in an account, then made 2 equal…" is one, and the answer key writes the unit with every answer. Money and measurement are where decimals live outside the classroom, and where a misplaced point is obviously wrong.

Set A, Set B and Set C

All three sets are produced by the site's deterministic generator from a fixed seed, so they are the same every time the site is built and the answer keys are exact. Where Set A's problem 6 is "The temperature changed by -3.9°F each hour for 7.9 hours.…", Set B's is "Yara borrowed $120 from a relative, paid back 1/2 of the…".

How to use this worksheet

Have the student estimate before computing, then compare. At grade 7 an decimals answer that is wildly off should announce itself, and building that reflex matters as much as the ten answers. If more than a third of the ten problems come back wrong, stop and step back a grade in decimals rather than assigning Set B.

One mistake to watch for

Decimals are aligned to the right: 3.5 + 0.42 = 3.92. On this grade 7 word problems, problem 7 ("The temperature was -15.3°C at dawn and rose by 11.9°C by…") is the kind of item where it shows.

The right-alignment habit from whole numbers is being applied to a notation where the point, not the right edge, fixes the value.

Write in the placeholder zero (3.50) before adding; aligning the points then aligns everything else.
