What this worksheet covers
There are 72 measurement problems here — one page to work, one page of answers to check against — and Sets B and C repeat the layout with different numbers. What makes this set particular: the numbers run as high as 10,000. Problems 25 and 49, for instance, are "7 days = ___ hr" and "12 qt = ___ pt". Common Core 5.MD.1 is the slot this page fills.
Skills practised
The grade 5 measurement sequence covers conversions with decimals, volume of rectangular prisms, and missing dimensions; this page sits inside it. Specifically, the problems practise conversions with decimals, area and perimeter, and mixed customary units. To finish it, a student has to reason backwards from a result to a missing part. 66 different answers appear across the 72 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.
About the timed drill format
The timer box at the top has room for minutes, seconds and a score out of 72; a realistic target for a page like this, where problem 25, "7 days = ___ hr" is a typical item, is four to five minutes. Unit conversions are facts — 12 inches, 100 centimeters, 60 minutes — and a timer shows which are known.
Set A, Set B and Set C
All three sets are produced by the site's deterministic generator from a fixed seed, so they are the same every time the site is built and the answer keys are exact. Where Set A's problem 37 is "264 hr = ___ days", Set B's is "6 qt = ___ pt".
How to use this worksheet
Give this timed drill uninterrupted. At grade 5, measurement is where procedure and recall have to run at the same time, and 72 problems done in fragments hide which of the two is the problem. Print Set B of this measurement timed drill before writing on Set A; the same skill worked twice a week apart tells you far more than once.
