What this worksheet covers
This is a 30-problem drill for grade 5 measurement, printed in black and white with the key on page two. What makes this set particular: some operands are decimals rather than whole numbers and the numbers run as high as 720. Problems 11 and 21, for instance, are "9 hr = ___ min" and "6 kg = ___ g". Common Core 5.MD.1 is the slot this page fills.
Skills practised
At grade 5, measurement is about conversions with decimals, volume of rectangular prisms, and missing dimensions, and this sheet takes one slice of that. To finish it, a student has to keep the decimal points aligned and reason backwards from a result to a missing part. 28 different answers appear across the 30 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.
About the drill format
A drill is straight practice: 30 problems of the same kind, laid out across the page with working space under each — problem 11, "9 hr = ___ min" is typical of the whole page. A page of one conversion or one formula is where the factor or the formula becomes automatic.
Set A, Set B and Set C
All three sets are produced by the site's deterministic generator from a fixed seed, so they are the same every time the site is built and the answer keys are exact. Where Set A's problem 16 is "Volume of a 6 m × 6 m × 2 m box", Set B's is "Volume of a 7 ft × 8 ft × 7 ft box".
How to use this worksheet
By grade 5 a student should take all 30 measurement problems in one sitting. If the page takes more than about fifteen minutes, the underlying facts are probably not automatic yet, and that is worth fixing before more measurement practice piles on. Keep the key face down until all 30 problems are finished, then go through the misses together rather than only totalling the score.
One mistake to watch for
A conversion multiplies when it should divide: 36 inches becomes 432 feet. Watch problem 21 of this drill — "6 kg = ___ g" — for this one.
The direction of the conversion is not being reasoned about.
Ask "should the answer be a bigger number or a smaller one?" before touching the factor; feet are bigger units so there are fewer of them.
