What this worksheet covers

This is a 72-problem timed drill for grade 3 measurement, printed in black and white with the key on page two. Within that, the numbers run as high as 879. Problems 25 and 49, for instance, are "Perimeter of a 11 cm by 4 cm rectangle" and "Perimeter of a 11 m by 15 m rectangle". Common Core 3.MD.8 is the slot this page fills.

Skills practised

Grade 3 measurement means perimeter and area of rectangles, elapsed time in minutes, and grams and milliliters. Specifically, the problems practise perimeter of rectangles, area of rectangles, and elapsed time in minutes. To finish it, a student has to reason backwards from a result to a missing part. 69 different answers appear across the 72 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.

About the timed drill format

The timer box at the top has room for minutes, seconds and a score out of 72; a realistic target for a page like this, where problem 25, "Perimeter of a 11 cm by 4 cm rectangle" is a typical item, is four to five minutes. Unit conversions are facts — 12 inches, 100 centimeters, 60 minutes — and a timer shows which are known.

Set A, Set B and Set C

All three sets are produced by the site's deterministic generator from a fixed seed, so they are the same every time the site is built and the answer keys are exact. Where Set A's problem 37 is "Perimeter of a 8 in by 9 in rectangle", Set B's is "Perimeter of a 15 cm by 13 cm rectangle".

How to use this worksheet

By grade 3 a student should take all 72 measurement problems in one sitting. If the page takes more than about fifteen minutes, the underlying facts are probably not automatic yet, and that is worth fixing before more measurement practice piles on. Use the key as a check, not as a grade; none of the 72 problems needs a score attached to be useful.
