What this worksheet covers

24 measurement problems fill this drill page; problem 9 asks "39 ft + 32 ft", and the sheet stays at that level throughout. What makes this set particular: the numbers run as high as 41. Further down, problem 17 asks "22 m - 17 m". The sheet sits inside Common Core 2.MD.5, in the grade 2 Measurement & Data strand.

Skills practised

At grade 2, measurement is about adding and subtracting lengths, feet and inches, meters and centimeters, and time to the half hour, and this sheet takes one slice of that. What a student is asked to do here is adding and subtracting lengths and feet and inches, meters and centimeters. Concretely, the sheet tests whether a student can reason backwards from a result to a missing part.

About the drill format

This drill runs 24 problems in a steady layout, so the eye never has to hunt for the next one; problem 9, "39 ft + 32 ft" shows the level it holds. A page of one conversion or one formula is where the factor or the formula becomes automatic.

Set A, Set B and Set C

The three sets come from the same generator with three different seeds: same skill, same layout, fresh numbers, and an answer key computed with the problems. Where Set A's problem 13 is "25 ft + 41 ft", Set B's is "40 m + 32 m".

How to use this worksheet

Five focused minutes beats twenty distracted ones at grade 2. Fold this drill in half, do one part of the 24 problems today and the rest tomorrow, and let the student use fingers or counters if they want them. Mark the 24 problems the same day using the key — an error caught immediately is a correction, and one caught next week is a habit.

One mistake to watch for

A conversion multiplies when it should divide: 36 inches becomes 432 feet. Problem 17 on this grade 2 drill page, "22 m - 17 m", is where to look for it.

The direction of the conversion is not being reasoned about.

Ask "should the answer be a bigger number or a smaller one?" before touching the factor; feet are bigger units so there are fewer of them.
