What this worksheet covers

30 fractions problems fill this drill page; problem 11 asks "A rectangle is cut into 6 equal parts and 5 parts are…", and the sheet stays at that level throughout. Within that, each problem arrives as a few sentences of context rather than a bare expression and several problems use mixed numbers, which have to be handled without dropping the whole-number part. Further down, problem 21 asks "A square is cut into 8 equal parts and 6 parts are shaded.…". Common Core 3.NF.1 is the slot this page fills.

Skills practised

The grade 3 fractions sequence covers naming fractions of a whole, equivalent fractions, and comparing like denominators; this page sits inside it. What a student is asked to do here is naming fractions of a whole and equivalent fractions. Working the page asks a student to read a situation and choose an operation before computing, work in fractional units and give the answer in lowest terms, and reason backwards from a result to a missing part. Twenty different answers appear across the 30 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.

About the drill format

This drill runs 30 problems in a steady layout, so the eye never has to hunt for the next one; problem 11, "A rectangle is cut into 6 equal parts and 5 parts are…" shows the level it holds. A page of one fraction operation lets the renaming step become routine before anything else is layered on.

Set A, Set B and Set C

The three sets come from the same generator with three different seeds: same skill, same layout, fresh numbers, and an answer key computed with the problems. Where Set A's problem 16 is "1/2 = ___/4", Set B's is "3/4 = ___/12".

How to use this worksheet

Work the 30 problems straight through, then check against the key together rather than handing it back marked; asking a grade 3 student to find their own fractions error teaches more than seeing it circled. Keep the key face down until all 30 problems are finished, then go through the misses together rather than only totalling the score.

One mistake to watch for

A larger denominator is taken to mean a larger fraction: 1/8 is judged bigger than 1/4. Problem 21 on this grade 3 drill page, "A square is cut into 8 equal parts and 6 parts are shaded.…", is where to look for it.

Whole-number thinking — eight is more than four — is being applied to the size of the pieces.

Fold a strip into fourths and another into eighths and compare one piece of each; more pieces means smaller pieces.
