What this worksheet covers
Twenty multiplication problems fill this vertical format page; problem 7 asks "10 × 4", and the sheet stays at that level throughout. Within that, the numbers run as high as 90. Further down, problem 14 asks "4 × 30". It is written against Common Core 3.OA.7 — Operations & Algebraic Thinking, grade 3.
Skills practised
At grade 3, multiplication is about multiplication facts to 10 × 10 and 12 × 12, and multiplying by multiples of ten, and this sheet takes one slice of that. Specifically, the problems practise multiplication facts to 10 × 10 and multiplying by multiples of ten. To finish it, a student has to recall the multiplication facts quickly and accurately, without counting up to them. Eighteen different answers appear across the twenty problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.
About the vertical format format
The 20 problems here — problem 7, "10 × 4", for one — are printed in column form, the layout the standard algorithm is written for. Stacked factors put the partial products in columns, which is where the place-value shift in long multiplication lives.
Set A, Set B and Set C
The three sets come from the same generator with three different seeds: same skill, same layout, fresh numbers, and an answer key computed with the problems. Where Set A's problem 11 is "10 × 5", Set B's is "1 × 4".
How to use this worksheet
By grade 3 a student should take all twenty multiplication problems in one sitting. If the page takes more than about fifteen minutes, the underlying facts are probably not automatic yet, and that is worth fixing before more multiplication practice piles on. Date the vertical format before filing it. Set C from six weeks later is the cheapest evidence you have that the multiplication stuck.
One mistake to watch for
Zeros are lost when multiplying by multiples of ten: 6 × 40 becomes 24. Problem 14 on this grade 3 vertical format page, "4 × 30", is where to look for it.
The fact 6 × 4 is recalled and the ten is forgotten.
Rewrite 6 × 40 as 6 × 4 × 10 for a few days so the ten is a visible factor rather than a decoration.
