What this worksheet covers

This is a 8-problem word problems for grade 1 time and money, printed in black and white with the key on page two. Each problem arrives as a few sentences of context rather than a bare expression and the quantities are amounts of money, so answers need a dollar or cent sign to be complete. Problems 3 and 6, for instance, are "School starts at 2:00. Kira arrives 1 hour early. What time…" and "School starts at 11:00. Ivan arrives 1 hour early. What…".

Skills practised

The grade 1 time and money sequence covers reading a clock to the half hour, counting like coins, and two kinds of coins together; this page sits inside it. Concretely, the sheet tests whether a student can read a situation and choose an operation before computing and carry money notation through to the answer. Seven different answers appear across the eight problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.

About the word problems format

The 8 story problems each get a full line and an answer rule; problem 3, "School starts at 2:00. Kira arrives 1 hour early. What time…" is one, and the answer key writes the unit with every answer. Practice schedules, lunch money and movie times are the situations time and money were taught for.

Set A, Set B and Set C

All three sets are produced by the site's deterministic generator from a fixed seed, so they are the same every time the site is built and the answer keys are exact. Where Set A's problem 5 is "School starts at 3:00. Omar arrives 1 hour early. What time…", Set B's is "School starts at 3:00. Felix arrives 1 hour early. What…".

How to use this worksheet

Five focused minutes beats twenty distracted ones at grade 1. Fold this word problems in half, do one part of the eight problems today and the rest tomorrow, and let the student use fingers or counters if they want them. Mark the eight problems the same day using the key — an error caught immediately is a correction, and one caught next week is a habit.

One mistake to watch for

Coins are counted by number rather than by value: three dimes and two quarters is "5 cents". Problem 6 on this grade 1 word problems page, "School starts at 11:00. Ivan arrives 1 hour early. What…", is where to look for it.

A coin is being treated as a unit of one.

Sort coins by type, count each type by its value, and write the running total.
