What this worksheet covers

Set A of this grade 2 drill sheet holds twenty mixed operations problems on one printable page, with the answer key on the page behind it. Within that, eight of the twenty column problems need regrouping and the rest do not, so the two cases are mixed rather than blocked and the numbers run as high as 94. Two problems from the middle of the page — "20 + 29" and "69 − 9" — show the range. It is written against Common Core 2.NBT.5 — Number & Operations in Base Ten, grade 2.

Skills practised

Grade 2 mixed operations means addition and subtraction within 100 and 1,000, and three-term problems. What a student is asked to do here is grade 2 Mixed Addition and Subtraction Within 100. To finish it, a student has to regroup past ten rather than counting up one at a time. Seventeen different answers appear across the twenty problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.

About the drill format

This drill runs 20 problems in a steady layout, so the eye never has to hunt for the next one; problem 7, "20 + 29" shows the level it holds. A drill that changes operation from problem to problem tests sign reading as much as computation.

Set A, Set B and Set C

Set A is the original MathSheetLab worksheet; Sets B and C keep its structure and redraw the numbers, with each answer recomputed rather than copied. Where Set A's problem 11 is "5 + 93", Set B's is "8 + 52".

How to use this worksheet

Sit alongside for this mixed operations drill. At grade 2 the useful information is not the score but which of the twenty problems drew a pause. Use the key as a check, not as a grade; none of the twenty problems needs a score attached to be useful.

One mistake to watch for

The operation sign is ignored: every problem on a mixed page is added. On this grade 2 drill, problem 14 ("69 − 9") is the kind of item where it shows.

Sign reading is not yet part of the routine because most practice pages only carry one operation.

Have the student circle or trace every operation sign before solving anything on the page.
