What this worksheet covers
There are 50 addition problems here — one page to work, one page of answers to check against — and Sets B and C repeat the layout with different numbers. Within that, eight of the 50 column problems need regrouping and the rest do not, so the two cases are mixed rather than blocked and the numbers run as high as 10. Problems 17 and 34, for instance, are "1 + 0" and "3 + 3". The skill maps to Common Core K.OA.5.
Skills practised
At kindergarten, addition is about sums within 5 and then within 10, and the pairs that make ten, and this sheet takes one slice of that. The skills on the page: sums within 5 and sums within 10. To finish it, a student has to regroup past ten rather than counting up one at a time. Eleven different answers appear across the 50 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.
About the timed drill format
The timer box at the top has room for minutes, seconds and a score out of 50; a realistic target for a page like this, where problem 17, "1 + 0" is a typical item, is three to four minutes. Fact recall has to be automatic before column addition can be, and a timed page is the only honest test of automatic.
Set A, Set B and Set C
All three sets are produced by the site's deterministic generator from a fixed seed, so they are the same every time the site is built and the answer keys are exact. Where Set A's problem 26 is "0 + 4", Set B's is "7 + 3".
How to use this worksheet
Sit alongside for this addition timed drill. At kindergarten the useful information is not the score but which of the 50 problems drew a pause. Ask the student to re-work one missed addition problem from scratch on Set B rather than correcting it in place; the second attempt shows whether the method changed.
