What this worksheet covers

Set A of this kindergarten mixed review sheet holds twenty subtraction problems on one printable page, with the answer key on the page behind it. Eight of the twenty column problems need regrouping and the rest do not, so the two cases are mixed rather than blocked and the numbers run as high as 10. Two problems from the middle of the page — "10 - 3" and "10 - 6" — show the range. The skill maps to Common Core K.OA.5.

Skills practised

At kindergarten, subtraction is about taking away within 5 and within 10, including taking from ten, and this sheet takes one slice of that. Specifically, the problems practise subtraction within 5, subtraction within 10, and taking away from 10. Working the page asks a student to regroup past ten rather than counting up one at a time. Nine different answers appear across the twenty problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.

About the mixed review format

The 20 problems are deliberately assorted — problem 7, "10 - 3" is followed by something of another shape — so the student has to read each one rather than run the last method again. Mixing regrouping and non-regrouping problems stops a student from borrowing on every problem out of habit.

Set A, Set B and Set C

The three sets come from the same generator with three different seeds: same skill, same layout, fresh numbers, and an answer key computed with the problems. Where Set A's problem 11 is "10 - 9", Set B's is "2 - 1".

How to use this worksheet

Sit alongside for this subtraction mixed review. At kindergarten the useful information is not the score but which of the twenty problems drew a pause. Keep the key face down until all twenty problems are finished, then go through the misses together rather than only totalling the score.

One mistake to watch for

Subtraction facts are recomputed by counting back one at a time. Problem 14 on this kindergarten mixed review page, "10 - 6", is where to look for it.

The relationship to addition has not been made explicit, so 13 − 8 is not being read as "8 plus what is 13".

Practise fact families as a unit, four equations at a time, and give unknown-addend problems alongside the subtraction ones.
