What this worksheet covers
There are 50 subtraction problems here — one page to work, one page of answers to check against — and Sets B and C repeat the layout with different numbers. Nine of the 50 column problems need regrouping and the rest do not, so the two cases are mixed rather than blocked and the numbers run as high as 10. Problems 17 and 34, for instance, are "2 - 2" and "8 - 2". The skill maps to Common Core K.OA.5.
Skills practised
The kindergarten subtraction sequence covers taking away within 5 and within 10, including taking from ten; this page sits inside it. Specifically, the problems practise subtraction within 5, subtraction within 10, and taking away from 10. Working the page asks a student to regroup past ten rather than counting up one at a time. Ten different answers appear across the 50 problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.
About the timed drill format
The timer box at the top has room for minutes, seconds and a score out of 50; a realistic target for a page like this, where problem 17, "2 - 2" is a typical item, is three to four minutes. Subtraction facts are the slowest of the four to become automatic; a timer shows which ones are still being counted.
Set A, Set B and Set C
All three sets are produced by the site's deterministic generator from a fixed seed, so they are the same every time the site is built and the answer keys are exact. Where Set A's problem 26 is "5 - 1", Set B's is "7 - 4".
How to use this worksheet
Kindergarten attention runs short, so split these 50 subtraction problems over two or three sittings rather than pushing through in one; a number line or counters within reach is a strategy, not a failure. Keep the key face down until all 50 problems are finished, then go through the misses together rather than only totalling the score.
