What this worksheet covers
Set A of this kindergarten vertical format sheet holds sixteen subtraction problems on one printable page, with the answer key on the page behind it. Within that, one of the sixteen column problems need regrouping and the rest do not, so the two cases are mixed rather than blocked and the numbers run as high as 10. Two problems from the middle of the page — "2 - 1" and "3 - 3" — show the range. The skill maps to Common Core K.OA.5.
Skills practised
The kindergarten subtraction sequence covers taking away within 5 and within 10, including taking from ten; this page sits inside it. What a student is asked to do here is subtraction within 5 and subtraction within 10. Concretely, the sheet tests whether a student can regroup past ten rather than counting up one at a time. Six different answers appear across the sixteen problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.
About the vertical format format
The 16 problems here — problem 6, "2 - 1", for one — are printed in column form, the layout the standard algorithm is written for. Column layout is the format regrouping was designed for; the trade has somewhere to be written.
Set A, Set B and Set C
The three sets come from the same generator with three different seeds: same skill, same layout, fresh numbers, and an answer key computed with the problems. Where Set A's problem 9 is "1 - 1", Set B's is "5 - 1".
How to use this worksheet
Kindergarten attention runs short, so split these sixteen subtraction problems over two or three sittings rather than pushing through in one; a number line or counters within reach is a strategy, not a failure. Keep the key face down until all sixteen problems are finished, then go through the misses together rather than only totalling the score.
One mistake to watch for
Subtraction facts are recomputed by counting back one at a time. On this kindergarten vertical format, problem 11 ("3 - 3") is the kind of item where it shows.
The relationship to addition has not been made explicit, so 13 − 8 is not being read as "8 plus what is 13".
Practise fact families as a unit, four equations at a time, and give unknown-addend problems alongside the subtraction ones.
