What this worksheet covers
Set A of this kindergarten mixed review sheet holds twenty addition problems on one printable page, with the answer key on the page behind it. Within that, one of the thirteen column problems need regrouping and the rest do not, so the two cases are mixed rather than blocked and the numbers run as high as 10. Two problems from the middle of the page — "4 + 0" and "1 + ___ = 10" — show the range. The skill maps to Common Core K.OA.5.
Skills practised
Kindergarten addition means sums within 5 and then within 10, and the pairs that make ten. What a student is asked to do here is sums within 5, sums within 10, and making ten. To finish it, a student has to regroup past ten rather than counting up one at a time and reason backwards from a result to a missing part. Ten different answers appear across the twenty problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.
About the mixed review format
The 20 problems are deliberately assorted — problem 7, "4 + 0" is followed by something of another shape — so the student has to read each one rather than run the last method again. Alternating shapes stops a student from running one procedure on autopilot down the page.
Set A, Set B and Set C
The three sets come from the same generator with three different seeds: same skill, same layout, fresh numbers, and an answer key computed with the problems. Where Set A's problem 11 is "8 + ___ = 10", Set B's is "0 + 6".
How to use this worksheet
Five focused minutes beats twenty distracted ones at kindergarten. Fold this mixed review in half, do one part of the twenty problems today and the rest tomorrow, and let the student use fingers or counters if they want them. If more than a third of the twenty problems come back wrong, stop and step back a grade in addition rather than assigning Set B.
One mistake to watch for
Answers to the missing-number problems are the sum of the two visible numbers. Watch problem 14 of this mixed review — "1 + ___ = 10" — for this one.
The equals sign is being read as "write the answer here", not as a statement of balance.
Read the equation aloud as a sentence — "something plus five is twelve" — before touching the pencil.
