What this worksheet covers
This is a 20-problem drill for kindergarten addition, printed in black and white with the key on page two. Three of the twenty column problems need regrouping and the rest do not, so the two cases are mixed rather than blocked. Problems 7 and 14, for instance, are "3 + 1" and "7 + 2". The skill maps to Common Core K.OA.5.
Skills practised
At kindergarten, addition is about sums within 5 and then within 10, and the pairs that make ten, and this sheet takes one slice of that. What a student is asked to do here is sums within 5 and sums within 10. To finish it, a student has to regroup past ten rather than counting up one at a time. Seven different answers appear across the twenty problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.
About the drill format
A drill is straight practice: 20 problems of the same kind, laid out across the page with working space under each — problem 7, "3 + 1" is typical of the whole page. A straight run of sums is where regrouping becomes routine rather than an event.
Set A, Set B and Set C
All three sets are produced by the site's deterministic generator from a fixed seed, so they are the same every time the site is built and the answer keys are exact. Where Set A's problem 11 is "2 + 1", Set B's is "5 + 0".
How to use this worksheet
Kindergarten attention runs short, so split these twenty addition problems over two or three sittings rather than pushing through in one; a number line or counters within reach is a strategy, not a failure. Print Set B of this addition drill before writing on Set A; the same skill worked twice a week apart tells you far more than once.
One mistake to watch for
Regrouping is skipped: 47 + 38 is answered as 715. Watch problem 14 of this drill — "7 + 2" — for this one.
Each column is treated as its own one-digit problem with no place-value structure joining them.
Return to expanded form for a few days and ask what 7 + 8 is worth; fifteen ones cannot sit in the ones column.
