What this worksheet covers

Set A of this kindergarten vertical format sheet holds sixteen addition problems on one printable page, with the answer key on the page behind it. Within that, two of the sixteen column problems need regrouping and the rest do not, so the two cases are mixed rather than blocked and the numbers run as high as 10. Two problems from the middle of the page — "2 + 0" and "0 + 4" — show the range. The skill maps to Common Core K.OA.5.

Skills practised

Kindergarten addition means sums within 5 and then within 10, and the pairs that make ten. What a student is asked to do here is sums within 5 and sums within 10. Working the page asks a student to regroup past ten rather than counting up one at a time. Seven different answers appear across the sixteen problems, so a student cannot copy one result down the page.

About the vertical format format

The 16 problems here — problem 6, "2 + 0", for one — are printed in column form, the layout the standard algorithm is written for. Stacked operands make the place-value columns visible, which is what regrouping actually depends on.

Set A, Set B and Set C

The three sets come from the same generator with three different seeds: same skill, same layout, fresh numbers, and an answer key computed with the problems. Where Set A's problem 9 is "4 + 1", Set B's is "1 + 4".

How to use this worksheet

Sit alongside for this addition vertical format. At kindergarten the useful information is not the score but which of the sixteen problems drew a pause. Mark the sixteen problems the same day using the key — an error caught immediately is a correction, and one caught next week is a habit.

One mistake to watch for

Three addends are added two at a time and the third is forgotten. On this kindergarten vertical format, problem 11 ("0 + 4") is the kind of item where it shows.

The student is running a two-number procedure and stopping when it ends.

Have the student circle the pair that makes ten first, then add the remaining number, so the third addend is part of the plan from the start.
